About the University

The University of Utah, commonly referred to as “the U” or “U of U,” is a public research university located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 1850 as the University of Deseret and renamed in 1892, it serves as the flagship institution of Utah’s higher education system and is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). With more than 35,000 students enrolled, the university is classified as an R1: Doctoral University with very high research activity, securing over $670 million in research funding in 2022. It is home to Utah’s first medical school, the S.J. Quinney College of Law, and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The campus features notable facilities such as the Rice–Eccles Stadium, the Jon M. Huntsman Center, and the J. Willard Marriott Library, and offers more than 400 student clubs and organizations. Its location provides easy access to outdoor recreation, including skiing and hiking, while also being close to the cultural and entertainment opportunities of downtown Salt Lake City. Dedicated to student success, research excellence, diversity, and community engagement, the University of Utah is also home to cultural institutions like the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Natural History Museum of Utah, Red Butte Garden, and the Pioneer Theatre Company.
