About the University

The University of the West (UWest) is a private, nonprofit university in Rosemead, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It was founded in 1990 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order, and began classes in 1991. Although inspired by Buddhist values and wisdom, UWest is non-sectarian — students of all backgrounds and beliefs are welcome, and religious practice is not required.

UWest is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), ensuring that its academic programs meet recognized standards of quality.
